AlUla Hosts World Archaeology Symposium, Exploring the Heritage of Mobile Communities

A global platform for archaeologists and cultural heritage experts, fostering collaboration and enriching dialogue to advance our understanding of human history

Over 100 experts in archaeology and cultural heritage, representing five continents, gathered in AlUla from 30th-31st October for the AlUla World Archaeology Symposium (AWAS 2024). Held at the magnificent Maraya venue – the world’s largest mirrored building – the symposium, titled: “Moving Forward: Past, Present and Future in the Archaeology and Heritage of Mobile Communities,” delved into the complex relationship between mobile and settled communities across history.

The symposium examined how trade, commerce, climate change, and conflict have influenced mobile communities throughout history. Experts from top universities and organisations shared valuable insights, highlighting the event's significance to the field of archaeology and the symposium’s central theme.

Attendees also had the opportunity to experience AlUla's rich heritage, visiting sites like Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, and AlUla Old Town. A special showcase of recent archaeological discoveries in AlUla and a pre-opening exclusive preview of the “Masterpieces of the National  Archeological Museum of Naples” exhibition, featuring artifacts from the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, were among the highlights.

In an address, Dr. Abdulrahman Alsuhaibani, RCU's Vice President of Culture, described AlUla as “a crossroads for connection, cultural and knowledge exchange,” underscoring the region’s ongoing archaeological exploration and AWAS’s role as a leading platform for dialogue. He also confirmed that plans for AWAS 2025 are already underway.
