Nestled within spectacular landscapes, AlUla is a treasure trove of history and culture. Its ancient sites tell stories of civilisations long gone but never forgotten. For first-time visitors, the following heritage experiences are a must-see, each offering a unique glimpse into the region's rich past.

Hegra

Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the Nabataeans. Dating back to before the 1st millennium BCE, it boasts over 110 intricately carved tombs.

Beyond its famous tombs, Hegra also unveils the essence of daily life in the ancient city, with remnants of wells, water channels, defensive walls, gates, and towers – highlighting the influence of Roman architecture.

Dadan & Jabal Ikmah

Dadan & Jabal Ikmah are historical realms of the Lihyanite and Dadanite civilisations. Starting at Dadan, visitors can marvel at a bygone era that dates back to the 9th century BCE.

As part of a day tour specifically for these sights, a short drive leads to Jabal Ikmah, nestled in a desert canyon. Known as the 'open-air library', Jabal Ikmah's walls are adorned with the most extensive collection of inscriptions, rock art, and petroglyphs, gaining official UNESCO recognition for historical significance with its induction into their Memory of the World Register.

AlUla's Old Town

Step into AlUla's Old Town and walk through a maze of historic alleys and hundreds of houses built of mud brick. This historic settlement, dating back to the 12th century, was once a bustling hub on ancient incense trading routes and a pivotal point on the pilgrimage path from Damascus to Makkah.

The Old Town's narrow alleys, lined with mud-brick houses, create an atmosphere of intimate connection with the past. The formidable 45-metre-high fort, a sentinel watching over the town, serves as a reminder of the area's strategic importance throughout history.

Bonus: Oasis Heritage Trail

For a serene encounter with AlUla's natural beauty, the Oasis Heritage Trail is unmissable. Stroll at your own pace through the lush Oasis, where palm trees cast gentle shadows on paths winding through historical splendour. This trail not only offers a respite from the desert sun but also a picturesque insight into the Oasis's role in AlUla's heritage.
