To walk through AlUla's Oasis is to experience not only its lush greenery and thriving farms but also to witness first-hand the ingenuity of ancient civilisations and the dedication of the indigenous people of the region.
Through their hands and their passion for the fertile land, AlUla has cultivated life in the form of over 2 million date palms, 200,000 citrus trees yielding 29 varieties of fruit, including lemons, oranges, grapefruit, and torounge, along with tens of other species such as eggplant, pumpkin, mango, okra and more.
This vibrant agricultural landscape is also testament to AlUla's commitment to protecting agricultural practices by consulting with and investing in local farmers, ultimately securing the future of organic and sustainable farming for the benefit of all.
Creating a vital link between farmers, the local population and travellers, AlUla has championed ecotourism and agritourism, allowing visitors to explore the Oasis and farms and learn about the county’s environmentally friendly farming system from the people running it.
AlUla’s eco-farms benefit from a blend of indigenous and scientific knowledge, as well as environmental and social approaches successfully applied to agricultural systems in similar areas. Through immersive experiences enriched by local guides and farmers, visitors learn about the history of the Oasis and its water resources.
This commitment to preserving AlUla’s agricultural heritage with the help of its farmers aligns with a broader vision to invest in its natural gifts and people. This dedication is rooted in the belief that sustainable growth and prosperity can only be achieved by safeguarding the unique agricultural practices that have sustained the region for centuries.
Several impactful agricultural initiatives have been launched over the years, including the Agriculture Restoration Project, Date Palm Replantation Project, AlUla Citrus Festival, and the Agriculture Training & Eco-Gardening Experience. AlUla is also actively working on improving the agricultural value chain to minimise crop product loss and waste, putting in place initiatives to ensure responsible water usage, and ensuring the recycling of agriculture waste to create organic compost.
To secure the future of AlUla’s agricultural practices and farmers, Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré and his firm, Kéré Architecture, have been appointed to design the Oasis Agriculture Campus. This campus will support the regeneration and restoration of traditional agriculture by teaching sustainable techniques, offering education, and bolstering the local economy and community.
The community-driven campus will serve as a catalyst for the comprehensive regeneration of the entire Oasis, conserving and rehabilitating heritage buildings while introducing new structures that offer contemporary interpretations of traditional earthen architecture. Through these efforts, AlUla is not only preserving its rich agricultural heritage but also ensuring its sustainable future, benefiting both the land and its people.
