Maraya: Mirroring AlUla’s Beauty

AlUla is known for its breathtaking desert landscape and magnificent heritage sites. Its newest wonder, Maraya, rises from the sand like a mirage. Designed to blend into the surrounding landscape, the state-of-the-art structure is covered in mirrored panels reflecting AlUla’s beauty.

Maraya, which translates to “mirror” or “reflection” in Arabic, boasts 9,740 square metres of mirrors, making it the largest mirrored building in the world according to Guinness World Records.

The building, which acts as the home to AlUla’s growing arts and culture scene, is an extension of the native landscape that surrounds it. As it literally reflects wondrous cliffs, legendary rock formations and sumptuous sunsets, the building itself becomes a work of art.

A New Cultural Chapter
An Astounding Monument

“As evident in the architecture of the Nabataeans, Maraya Concert Hall was created by utilising segmentation and [by] sculpting the blocks,” says designer Florian Boje of Gio Forma. “This unique edifice makes us think about the unique landscape of the geological saga, the radical abstraction of the enchanting environment of AlUla, and the uncommon incursions for man in the natural landscape; the reflections give an overwhelming balance and a deep sense of the connection of human heritage with nature and its intertwining and harmonising together, which provides us with the responsibility of protecting our human culture that is combined with the exceptional nature of AlUla.”

The AlUla valley has been a crossroads of culture and heritage for centuries. Now, with the addition of experiences such as the Maraya Concert Hall, AlUla is emerging as a global cultural centre, combining ancient culture with modern art.

The best example is Maraya’s emergence as the centrepiece of Winter at Tantora, the premier cultural festival that will celebrate its third season beginning in the fall of 2020. In Season Two of Winter at Tantora, Maraya Concert Hall hosted highly anticipated performances, VIP experiences and pop-up events, including concerts by global superstars from Andrea Bocelli to Enrique Iglesias.

While Winter at Tantora Festival has become Maraya Concert Hall’s hottest ticket, it isn’t the only event that brings people together here.
